The  language of instruction is English.  There is a strong emphasis throughout the school on English language and literature, mathematics, history, geography, sciences, foreign languages, art, and music.  In the belief that students will best benefit from the experience of living in Germany if they are able to communicate effectively and take part in local culture, the FIS offers German language instruction to all students from Kindergarten thorough the top of the school.  Furthermore, comprehensive instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered to serve students who come to the FIS with little or no English skills.

The School program is designed so that all students also have the opportunity to pursue studies in the arts, computers, and athletic and recreational skills in the form of extra-curricular activities.

The Kindergarten, a three year program for children ages 3-6, emphasizes preparation and readiness for Grade 1 entry.

The Elementary School (Grades 1-4) and the Middle School (Grades 5-8) provide a caring and stable environment with a balance of challenging academic studies and extra curricular offerings.  The Middle School is especially committed to providing students with the knowledge, learning strategies, and study skills necessary for a demanding High School  program.  In addition to the main curriculum subjects, ethics is taught throughout the school, and Spanish is taught from Grade 6 onwards. The High School program follows the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), an exam based program where students take final exams at the end of their Grade 10 studies.  The school follows the IB Diploma Program for Grades 11 and 12 and offers a parallel non-IB program in these grades as well.
